On November 25, 2024, a delegation from the University of Strathclyde in the United Kingdom visited Nanjing Institute of Technology for exchange and collaboration. The delegation included Kwok Lo, Head of International Affairs for the Faculty of Engineering; Tony Gachagan, Head of the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering; and Stuart Shorthouse, International Affairs Manager for the Faculty of Engineering. Zhang Yangfei, Deputy Chair of University Council and President of the NJIT, warmly welcomed the guests. The meeting was attended by key leaders from the Graduate School, the International Cooperation and Exchange Office, the School of Mechanical Engineering, the School of Electrical Engineering, the School of Automation, the School of Communication and Artificial Intelligence, the School of Integrated Circuits, and the School of Architectural Engineering.

On behalf of the university, Zhang Yangfei, President of NJIT, extended a warm welcome to the delegation from the University of Strathclyde and provided an overview of NJIT’s development and its achievements in high-quality progress in recent years. He noted that NJIT and the University of Strathclyde have long maintained a close partnership, sharing a solid foundation for collaboration, similar disciplinary structures, and broad prospects for cooperation. Currently, NJIT is fully committed to building a top-tier applied institution with distinctive features and national prominence, continuously enhancing its comprehensive strength and educational standards. He expressed hope that this exchange would further deepen the collaborative ties between the two universities. Building on the optimization and consolidation of existing joint educational programs, he proposed strengthening communication and cooperation across more levels and broader fields to provide more faculty and students with opportunities to broaden their international perspectives.
Kwok Lo introduced the development history, educational characteristics, and disciplinary strengths of the University of Strathclyde and its Faculty of Engineering, elaborating in detail on the faculty’s research and innovation initiatives closely integrated with industry. He emphasized that the University of Strathclyde and Nanjing Institute of Technology have actively engaged in student joint programs, cross-cultural exchanges, and faculty-student mobility, fostering a profound friendship over the years. Looking ahead, he expressed anticipation for collaboration with NJIT in undergraduate “2+2” dual-degree programs, postgraduate “1+1+1” dual-degree programs, and joint doctoral training initiatives. He highlighted potential areas for mutually beneficial cooperation in fields such as electronic and electrical engineering, mechanical and aerospace engineering, civil and environmental engineering, architecture, design, manufacturing, and engineering management.

Following the meeting, the delegation held a student session, providing a vivid and detailed introduction to current NJIT students interested in studying at the University of Strathclyde. The presentation covered the university’s overview, its leading disciplines, graduate prospects, and application procedures for relevant programs.

It is reported that the University of Strathclyde, founded in 1796 and located in Glasgow, the third-largest city in the United Kingdom, is one of the largest engineering education centers in Europe and home to Scotland’s largest Faculty of Engineering. NJIT and the University of Strathclyde established partnership in 2009, laying a solid foundation for collaboration in fields such as mechanical engineering, electronic and electrical engineering, architecture, and civil and environmental engineering. Undergraduate and graduate students from relevant disciplines at our university are eligible to apply for inter-university exchange programs to pursue further studies at the University of Strathclyde and obtain corresponding degrees.
